A continuing problem for those having their tax returns done by supposedly legitimate businesses is tax preparer fraud. For example, a federal court recently permanently barred a Dallas-area tax preparer from preparing federal tax returns for others. The offenses of this tax scam were typical and included numerous returns prepared with false and inflated deductions and credits, resulting in underpayment of taxes. This company also didn’t provide accurate copies of the filed returns to its customers. The Justice Department maintains a listing of persons barred from preparing tax returns on its website.
